Hughe weapons testing facility.

Deep beneath what was now being called alliance mountain Monti was waiting for his new assistant to arrive. It had been three days since his promotion to scientific director of the 3rd fleet. He had accepted the job admiral Reshmar had offered but he was not excited about the new responsibility. He now had. He was over nearly a thousand engineers and scientists, as well as countless technicians who assisted the various projects 3rd fleet was now working on.
He walked along the endless access way which ran the distance from Mount Alliance to the Starport. He had meant to purpose a tram of some sort of motor transport for the two kilometer long tunnel but as of yet the resources and more importantly credits have not been allocated for the project. So he has to walk the long tunnel twice a day to and from the weapons facility.

As he entered the weapons test room a large single muzzle weapon sat on a retrofitted AT-AA walker which they used to move heavy objects and as a test firing platform for new weapons. He had read over the technical spec and the theorized weapons performance but today was test day. This new design would give the alliance the needed weapons range to combat the advanced weaponry of the Imperials larger starships. The test room was cleared and Monti stood with twelve other engineers and scantiest in the observation lounge above the floor. A fifty centimeter plate of durasteel was mounted on the fare wall of the kilometer long firing range. As the last preparations were being made the sound in the room became deafening as the massive power generator began to spin and charge the capacitor banks.

The console operator gave the men and women in the room a warning then pressed the button to fire the weapon. A bright red blast escaped the muzzle of the weapon and struck the durasteel with a bright dispersion of energy. A few seconds later the beam fired again with the same power and result as the beam before it. Twelve shots were fired then the operator powered down the weapon and transmitted the performance details a data crystal. The weapon had the desired strength and rate of fire the test crew had wanted now the final range test was do be done.

twenty eight hours later the group of engineers and scientists meet again aboard a dreadnaught which had been serving as the range test platform for the Vengeance project. Technicians had mounted a quad heavy mount of the new weapon and prepared it for the test. The mount was much larger than a standard mount and had a mass more than twice that of a normal heavy quad mount. For this reason the Engineers had to build support frames for the massive mounts. The group meet in the starboard observation room and waited for the weapon to be fired. Admiral Reshmar had joined the group and was sitting at the front of the room looking out at the damaged assault frigate which would be used as a target.

Monti took a seat and waited until the lead engineer of the project stood and spoke. He has known the man for years and at the time of his promotion thought he would have been the better choice for the position. Admiral Reshmar had chosen him over more qualified men and women for some reason and he was not one to question the Calamri admirals choice. he had learned to trust the admiral and would serve as best he could in his new position. As the man sat once again the decking below Monti's feet shock as the first bolt of energy fired. unlike older batteries which could fire weapons in linked modes or single mode to target multiple targets the Vengeance battery was made to provide a constant rate of fire on a single target. Each of the four weapons fired in one after the other in a continuous rain of destruction. While the rate of fire for each cannon was slower the battery substituted the power of a linked shot to the higher rate of single fire of the over all battery.

Beam after beam lanced out at the old frigate in the distance. The ship was tine and at this distance you could not make out the impact of the energy beams as the hit the ship. But with in three minutes the ship exploded in a fireball which was clear.

As the crowd cleared the room Admiral Reshmar stopped and congratulated Monti on his teams work. His team, something he guessed he would have to get used to. He thanked the Admiral and then waited until the last of his people left. Of in the distance of space a new day had come for the alliance. A day they could match the range of the new Imperial weapons. A day the alliance moved one step closed to winning the war and freeing the galaxy from the oppression and corruption it had for so long been under.
