Lup, that would make sense if waiters and waitresses were paid like everyone else. Unfortunately, for them, they aren't.

This 18% thing is new to me. I always thought it was 15% and that is usually the minimum of what I would tip (bad service or no). I've never really gotten bad service.. or service I consider so bad to not deserve some sort of tip because I am still being served even if not as well as the next guy.

Waiters/waitresses are the whipping boys and girls of the restaurant industry because they are the ones the customer sees imo.

I tip between 10 percent and 20. Ten for pizza delivery, and if I'm on a date, I tip 20 to look like a big spender.

But I don't agree with it. I think if people are making shitty wages then they should get some fucking balls, union up, and reform the system.

You guys who don't live in America don't seem to understand.

Waiters only make about $2.50 an hour. A full week's paycheck, after taxes are taken out, is about $2.

They live on their tips, not their salary. Literally.

EDIT: Pizza delivery drivers make minimum wage ($5.25). And Pizza Hut, Papa Johns, Dominoes, etc., don't charge extra for delivery. At least not around here.

If waiters are only making $2.50 an hour, then they should take their employers to court. It's called minimum wage because it's the legal minimum you're allowed to pay someone. Tips do not count as "wages".

Damn, that makes sense! Must be a Canadian thing...

I believe, and this is just something I heard, that if the waiter doesn't make at least minimum wage with both the hourly rate and the tips, their employer must make up the difference.

I'll have to ask some people who know.

And no, X, they can't take them to court. Minimum wage doesn't apply to food service work.

Man, the States suck more and more every little tidbit like that comes out.

If I am legally working, it doesn't matter if I'm shoveling horse shit or performing minor surgery, I make $8 an hour. It's laughable to me that a nation that preaches about free capatilsm and market eqaulity treat's it's workers like slaves.

heh..

For some reason, having a person who makes $8/hour perform minor surgery on me does not instill a lot of confidence.

Ah, but Simon, in Australia they are paid properly. The one good thing the unions ever did was get an award wage for every job.

I understand its different in the US but seriously, why not just up the pay?

Oh yeah, because that means the COMPANY has to pay, and we all know the chances of any company voluntarily giving up its 'hard earned' pennies...
