What really had an impact on the Kriegsmarine, was the poor performance of the Hipper and Lutzow in the battle of ........ forgot what it was called, but it was an attack on an Artic Convoy. The convoy had an escort of eight destroyers, armed at best with 5" guns. The Hipper has 8" guns, and the Lutzow has 11.1" guns. What happens? Nothing. They meet the convoy, but their actions stink so badly that basically no convoy ships or escorts get sunk.

This led to Hitler threatining to disband the surface fleet, which prompted Grand Admiral Raeders resignation, after which command of the Surface fleet fell to the U-boat commander. There weren't very many surface ships left anyways. The Battleship Tirpitz, sister to Bismarck, was repeadelty bombed for the rest of the war until Tallboy bombs blew her guts out, the Battlecruiser Gnesnaiu, sister to Scharnhorst, was sitting it out, with her guns transferred to coastal defences, and herslef being scuttled as a blockwater, the Pocket Battleships Scheer, and Lutzow would also sit it out, with Scheer being destroyed by RAF bombers, and Lutzow scuttled to prevent her from falling into Soviet hands (although the Soviets raised and repaired her anyways), the Heavy Cruiser Hipper was sunk by RAF bombers, the Prinz Eugen sat it out and was transferred to the US postwar for Bikini Atomic Trials, and that was basically it. Oh, and the uncompleted Heavy Cruiser Seydlitz was destroyed by Soviet bombing.
