Arliss Retreat ~ location unknown

"Public Relations?" the cultured voice asked as the man, impeccably dressed (though casual), poured wine for his visitors. The gesture took second place to corporate business as his question implied and his visitors suddenly were glad they had brought themselves up to speed.

"The breach that was caused by your daughter ..uh.. assuming control over a "portion" of the business has been handled." a brunette woman, accepting a glass of wine first as Arliss walked around the rather long, black conference table. Even in his retreat, rooms were built to assume immediate company functions if necessary.

"Yes, the bitch no doubt screwed me over there but water under the bridge.." the Seamus waxed over handing another glass to the second woman.

"I love you too, daddy." a young blond woman with icy blue eyes said as she accepted a glass.

"How's your Imperial lover?" he mentioned, his voice betraying no real interest.

"Not a part of this meeting" her voice suddenly became hard.

Seamus ignored the comment and turned to a rather large black man, Head of Aquisitions.

"What news is there?"

The black man's booming voice rumbled, causing ripples in his wineglass, "Maverick Munitions plans to purchase Kuat Drive Yards.."

Arliss eyes widened a bit. "Really? And Kuat?"

"Bankrupt... War was bad for business, in their case. Their customers couldn't pay being blasted to bits and their planets economy's being wrecked."

"The woes of selling to military organizations."

The black man continued, "In an effort to infuse their company with cash, they sold their patents and their name."

"Mr. Conrad, how are we...." Arliss' voice trailed noting that the mousy financial officer was not present.

His lips compressed. "Where is Mr. Conrad?"

Suddenly, a door came open and the tiny man (muttering to himself) came bursting in.

"Mr. Conrad, we are so pleased you could join us."

"You want me to say it?? Fine!" the newcomer grumbled. "You were right and all that money we spent has paid off!!"

Arliss eyes played with an amused expression but he controlled it.

"Later. Right now Kuat."

"All patents have been secured by Interplanetary Services, Ltd. and transferred to our Research and Devlopement Corporations. You know this... We build original Kuat designs for the Empire... have held their exclusive contract for years.. Why?"

"The mother company was just bought?"

"Ahh.. .word came back of Maverick. Well, I don't know what they bought other than the company's buildings and perhaps their main factories which are outdated and need to be retooled. The cost alone would drive smaller business out of buisiness."

"Perhaps they buy name recognition?" Arliss' daughter commented.

"then they are 10 years behind. We've been doing business as Kuat Drive Yards for years though we cannot say it is incorporated. The original owners still retained that legal right in their home systems but that legal right disaapears once they leave their system. That's Business 101."

"I didnt' say it was a smart idea." Arliss' daughter counterd.

"Will their aquisition change anything?" Seamus asked.

The black man continued, "We still retain exclusive building contracts with the Empire and others. Give them a year, they will be floundering."

Seamus nodded and turned back to the Financial Officer.

"What's happened?"

"You bloody won our bet!" the little man grated irritably.

"Explain for our benefit.." Arliss' daughter spoke coldly.

"We've been spending massive amounts of money artificially compressing and spin sealing Tibanna Gas and we were throwing money away when we kept our prices as cheap as Bespin. Now in the past two weeks, our losses have been recouped at an astronomical rate."

"I dislike being dictated to by an outside company." Seamus simply stated, knowing that Mr. Conrad hated to lose even the smallest amount of money.

"Well it's paid off. Here.. look at this report:

Quote:
fter the recent change in governments of Taloraan it seems Tibanna Gas is taking a huge dent in the economy recently with the lack of sale to the New Alliance, Chimeran Syndicate, and Mon Cal Republic as the Rogue Empire continues to dictate Bespin production and sale...

Our reporters were able to get an interview in with Rogue Imperial representative Xelock Morden. "This is just an attempt to get more money through means of monopoly," says Morden. "Taloraan is simply trying to find a way to dictate the groups around it since they are not a militaristic system."

There have been no attempts of military harm to the Taloraan system with the free flow of gas from Bespin, minus that to the Alliance and Chimeran Syndicates, but diplomatic envoys have been sent in an attempt to clear the issue, and redouble the Tibanna Gas trade throughout the galaxy in even distributions.

The bloody fools."

"There monopoly will break." Arliss' daughter commented. "The end of the report says that Taloraan is trying to flex it's monopoly muscles but the beginning contradicts the report by saying that their production is dictated to by the Rogue Empire."

"We've been able to raise our prices a bit to offset costs but not nearly as much as them. It's interesting to note that the Rogue Empire representative mentioned not interrupting the free flow of gas..not that the gas was free.. (he laughed) and that he talked about increased distribution but nothing about lowering their prices."

"Of course. Their profits line their pseudo emperor's pockets making him nothing more than a fool with money." Arliss finished. "Again, we hold exclusive contracts with the Empire. It's foolish for any power to purchase needed materials from a foreign power (no matter how many offers of friendships there are)."

"There are Tibanna Gas transports on Dubrillion attempting to sell their goods but so far, we've been able to encourage local authorities to throw them out."

"We payed alot of money to change our production schedules and facilities to meet the damned Imperial Procedures and we've invested too much to allow these....these ruffians to interrupt our business." Mr. Conrad nearly jumped out of his chair.

"You..you." pointed to Arliss' daughter, "Get your Empire man to blow them up, throw them out ..just..just.. handle it! Or I will present their damned Regent with a bill and demand compensation for our lost funds."

"You just might do it too." Arliss daughter's lips spread to a grim smile.

"As long as the Empire maintains Martial Law, their military governs things by way of strict procedures. Their Internal Planetary Affairs Office will be followed. The money may not flow as quickly as it used too, but we do get more of it."

The CEO turned to his daughter. "And you? I want to see your balance sheets monthly..no exceptions. If our profit rate is not there I will send your skin to your lover and damn the consequences."

The meeting was ajourned.
